Plug-in balcony solar is now legal in the UK

From 27 August 2026 you can plug a small solar panel straight into a socket. What that changes, what it does not, and whether it is worth doing.

On 27 August 2026 plug-in solar became legal in the UK. You can now buy a small panel, hang it on a balcony rail or stand it in a garden, and plug it into an ordinary socket.

This has been normal in Germany for years, where they are called Balkonkraftwerke — balcony power stations — and there are well over a million of them. Britain is late to it, and the arrival matters most for the people rooftop solar has never been able to reach.

What a plug-in system is

One or two panels, a very small inverter, and a lead with a plug on the end. You put the panels somewhere sunny, plug the lead into a socket, and the electricity they make flows into the ring main and gets used by whatever happens to be switched on.

There is no installer, no scaffolding, no roof work and no rewiring. It is closer to buying an appliance than to having a system installed, and that is the whole point of it.

The output is modest. A rooftop array is typically ten or twelve panels; a plug-in kit is one or two. It will not run your house. What it will do is quietly offset the things that are always on — the fridge, the router, the standby loads — during daylight.

Who this changes things for

Rooftop solar has always required two things many people do not have: a roof you own, and several thousand pounds.

Renters. Nothing is fixed to the building and it comes with you when you move. You will still want your landlord's agreement, particularly about anything hanging off a balcony, but you are not asking them to pay for or approve an installation.

Flats. Where the roof belongs to the freeholder or the management company and getting anything onto it is a two-year conversation.

Anyone testing the water. A few hundred pounds to find out what solar actually does for your household is a very different proposition from several thousand.

Houses whose roof faces the wrong way. A fence, a shed roof or a south-facing wall might do better than the roof itself.

Is it worth doing?

Depends almost entirely on one thing: whether anybody is in during the day.

A plug-in kit generates in the middle of the day and there is no battery, so the electricity is used the instant it is made or it goes back into the grid for nothing. Unlike a proper installation, there is generally no export payment for it — you are not metered as a generator.

So every unit you are not using at that moment is a unit given away.

That makes the sums quite different from rooftop solar. A house with somebody home, or with a decent always-on baseload, will use most of what a small kit makes. A house that is empty from eight until six will give away a good deal of it.

The things that shift it in your favour are the same as ever, and easier at this scale: run the washing machine at lunchtime, set the dishwasher to start at noon, put the immersion heater on in the afternoon.

Before you buy one

This is new, and the rules around it are new. There are a few things to check before buying.

The current limits. There is a cap on how much a plug-in system may put into a socket circuit, and there are conditions attached to the legality. Check what they are at the point you buy, from the government or your network operator, since a product listing may be out of date.

Whether you need to tell anyone. Anything that pushes electricity into the grid has historically had to be notified to the company that owns the wires in your street: connected first, and the operator told within 28 days. Whether that still applies at this scale, and in what form, is worth a direct question to your network operator.

The socket and the circuit. Plugging a generator into a ring main is exactly the thing British wiring practice has been cautious about for years. Buy a kit sold for the UK market and meeting the current UK requirements, not one imported on the strength of being legal somewhere else.

How it is fixed. A panel is a sail. Anything mounted on a balcony, a fence or a flat roof needs to be attached for the worst weather your location gets, not the weather on the day you fit it. Something falling off a fourth-floor balcony is the risk that will get this technology regulated harder.

Your tenancy or lease. Nothing in the technology requires permission; your landlord or freeholder may, and that is far easier to establish before the kit arrives than after.

What to expect from it

The figures below are the honest size of what a plug-in kit does, and they are a long way below what a roof full of panels does.

A one or two panel kit in Britain will make somewhere in the region of a few hundred kilowatt-hours a year, of which you will use whatever you happen to use at the time. At normal electricity prices that is tens of pounds a year, not hundreds.

Against a cost of a few hundred pounds, that is a payback measured in years, not months — respectable, similar to rooftop solar, and on a much smaller sum of money.

What it is genuinely good at is something the arithmetic misses. It puts a live generation figure in front of you, and people who can see their own generation start moving their washing to the afternoon. That habit is worth more later, if you ever do fit a roof.

It is not a small version of a proper installation

Worth being clear, because the marketing will blur it.

A rooftop system is ten times the size, is metered, earns an export payment for what you do not use, and comes with a certificate that matters when you sell the house. A plug-in kit is an appliance that happens to make electricity.

If you own your roof and have the money, the roof is still the better investment by a wide margin. If you do not, this is the first time solar has been available to you at all, and that is the actual news.
